Why are the banks closed on Friday, October 9?

This Friday, October 9, Ecuador will celebrate the Independence of Guayaquil in 1820, 200 years ago. Although Guayaquil was founded on July 25, 1538, it remained subject to Spain. The liberation of Guayaquil from Spanish rule on October 9 is celebrated as a public holiday – i.e. banks will be closed.
