Something new and exciting from the Hogar

Probably for the first time in Ecuador, major Ecuadorian corporations have started distributing food to foundations who help redistribute it to those in need. Foundation Hogar de Esperanza has been given that task, here in Cuenca, to partner with these corporations in the distribution of usable food not selling in the supermarkets that would otherwise go to waste. It is an incredible opportunity and a great resource to help meet the needs of those facing hunger.

We have been receiving substantial donations from Supermaxi and Gran Aki for the past few weeks. Although the food is free, we still need to cover the costs of transportation, redistribution, storage, and repackaging. Our donors helped us purchase one commercial refrigerator and one freezer for which we are extremely grateful; however, we need another set in order to safely store all of the food prior to distribution. In addition, we are currently working to further streamline the processes that will allow us to redistribute in a safe and efficient manner. We have already redistributed to Mujeres con Exito and Hogar Cristo Rey.

This is an incredible project and one that will only grow over time. On October 8th, the University of Cuenca will be providing two nutrition students to assist us with coordination. Some of the homeless are also helping us with processing these donations and are learning new skills. This is one of the exciting projects that the expat community in Cuenca can be really proud of helping to start, and whose results will ricochet throughout the wider community.

But, we really need your continued support to make this successful. If we can do this properly, it can be a model to be used across Ecuador. Foundation Hogar de Esperanza has a reputation for getting things done properly and we are delighted that La Favorita Corporation has put their confidence in us to take this on. Please consider making a donation to support this project. If you prefer, we arrange for a pickup or you can do a bank transfer. Its' success depends on you. https://www.givingway.com/project/a9af7d
