Recommendation for Hacienda Chan Chan, cabins

I was looking for a change of scenery, out of the city, no trucks, and lots of fresh air and only an hour north of Cuenca. Others had recommended Chan Chan Hacienda, and I knew Julie from the delicious cheeses and yogurt she brings to Cuenca. So I went for two nights and had a marvelous, tranquil time.

The cabins are fully equipped. Each one sleeps six; very comfy, flannel sheets...thank goodness at this time of year. If you want to cook, the kitchen is supplied. The bathrooms are modern. I had the breakfast and dinner brought to the cabin. Delicious baked good, and plentiful all organic meals. Delicious cheeses, homemade. There is a wood burning stove or gas heater in each cabin.

If you like hiking you will love this 40-acre mountain top retreat with a river just below. Very vertical. I went up to see them milk one of the three herds, (each cow has her name) and then watched them feed the calves. There are pigs, two huge chances, ducks, geese, chickens, and of course laid-back dogs. I saw where the cheese is made. Julie and her family are very kind and busy, so communicating by email is preferable. And the aging room: quite an operation. Fresh breads, yogurt and butter at each meal. Seeing the sky full of stars without any lights was a joy. Enjoy.
