Info: Spike Lee’s latest work isn’t particularly subtle as a statement on America’s racist past and present, but subtlety probably isn’t really Lee’s intention. Rather, there’s an immediacy to ‘BlacKkKlansman’ that makes it land like a punch to the gut. Set in the 1970s, the film stars John David Washington as Ron Stallworth, from whose memoir the movie was adapted. After being hired as Colorado Springs’ first black police officer, he gets to work infiltrating the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan — by impersonating a white man over the phone. When an in-person meeting is arranged, Stallworth recruits a fellow officer, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), to be his white avatar.

Besides drawing explicit parallels to the current social climate, Lee also delves into less readily acknowledged issues surrounding race and identity: Flip struggles with his Jewish heritage, which he hasn’t had to think about or engage with until he is confronted by anti-Semitism in the KKK; Stallworth struggles to reconcile his dedication to the law with the reality of police racism. With these and other story lines, Lee helps ground a plot that might otherwise seem too fantastical. The irony, of course, is that so much of it actually happened. —
