Recommendation for El Mercado, restaurant

El Mercado has always been my favorite restaurant in Cuenca. I was thrilled to hear it had re-opened. Friends and I had an early dinner there last night. Everything was, if anything, even better than before the lockdown. The service was friendly and efficient, the menu appealing, the surroundings as lovely as ever. And the food! My three friends had steak; two filets, and one NY steak churrasco. One friend said it was the best steak she'd had in Cuenca. My salmon was perfectly cooked - pink in the center, as I had asked, without being raw. The orange glaze was delicious. The waiter cheerfully accepted my request to substitute mashed potatoes for the creamy rice. They were great.

The chocolate creme brulée was incredible. A small dish of dark chocolate creme brulée, with ginger sorbet, and three tiny brownies topped with chocolate mousse.

All virus safety measures are in force - tables are spaced well, staff wear masks and face shields, menus are electronic and they take your temperature when you arrive.

If you are eager to get back to a fine dining experience here after all these months, make a reservation and visit El Mercado for lunch or dinner. We need to support this wonderful restaurant.
