US Taxpayers - Economic Impact Payment info (stimulus payment)

For all of us US taxpayers, I wanted to pass along the following information:

If you had a balance due with your 2018 or 2019 tax return and had the balance paid by debit from a US bank account, the IRS will not use that bank account information to electronically deposit the stimulus payment.

You will need to log onto the IRS's system at the link below. After providing demographic information (SSN, date of birth, address, zip code), the system will tell you whether you are eligible for a payment and whether it has been deposited already or not.

If you had a balance due on your most recently filed return, the IRS will NOT use the bank account information provided to deposit the stimulus payment. This is not obvious and the IRS has not done a good job of publicizing this fact.

There is a further link once you get the status of your eligibility for you to enter your bank information if you do not wish to receive a paper check. After entering your adjusted gross income and tax balance due or refund, you will be able to enter the ABA routing number and account number for the bank where you would like to receive the payment.

If you do not provide the IRS with the banking information for direct deposit, you will be issued a paper check in 4-8 weeks. For us expats, a paper check is a real nightmare to deal with, and I would imagine that most of us would prefer an electronic deposit if possible.
