Hogar de Esperanza, Adventure in the Cajas

23 years ago, in November, the Cajas was designated a national park. In celebration, Hogar de Esperanza invites you to join us for an adventure in the Cajas giving you unique opportunity to learn about the religious and historic significance of this region with everyone’s favorite presenter, Martha Mays.

We will meet at Hogar de Esperanza at 9:30 AM where we will have coffee and discuss some cultural information. We will leave for El Sanctuario de la Virgen del Cajas at 10 AM which has great historical and religious significance. At this site on August 28, 1988, Patricia T├ílbot allegedly had a vision of an image that was later called the Virgin Guardian of the Faith, and reported multiple other sightings of this same image over a two-year period. The final apparition was reportedly seen on August 28, 1990, with about eighty thousand people in attendance. Devout Catholics continue to make pilgrimages to this site of great importance. Is this Ecuador’s version of the Lady of Fatima, or is it a hoax? You decide. And whether you believe the story or not, the culture and history of this sacred spot is fascinating. The wonderful Martha Mays will guide us through a captivating experience of the site.

We will then enjoy a delicious lunch of fresh trout (caught right there in the Cajas) and locro de papas (delicious potato soup) at Rancho Hnos Prado. The restaurant is uniquely beautiful – rustic with a stone interior and large fireplace. The chef, Fabian, is well-known for his excellent cooking which has delighted many visitors over the years, and two of the owners will play music for us as we relax and eat. Apart from the restaurant, Rancho Hnos Prado also offers fly fishing, horseback riding, hiking, and just plain relaxing while taking in the beauty of the Cajas.

We will offer guided nature walking tours (you can choose from either a 1-hour or 2-hour walk) after lunch, with one of the highlights being walking amongst the beautiful quinua (Polylepis) paper trees present in this area of the Cajas.

We hope you will join us on this adventure benefitting Hogar de Esperanza Foundation. Your support helps us to better realize our vision of reaching the most vulnerable people in Ecuadorian society affected by chronic illness in order to help them improve their quality of life.
