Working the "Core", your internal girdle.

To maintain posture and create a base from which all movement is executed, it is necessary to activate and integrate the muscles of the trunk. These are the core stabilizers or our "internal girdle". The abdominal muscles, and the erector spinae (back muscles which run along the spine) are the main core stabilizers of the trunk. The gluteal muscles are an important stabilizer when moving in an upright position. The back, gluteal and abdominal muscles work together protecting the spine from unwanted movement and aiding in alignment.

In a healthy individual, who has not suffered a low back injury, the core stabilizers work in sequence stiffening the spine, providing a stable platform to perform movements from. The timing and recruitment of the core muscles is affected if there has been trauma to the lower back.

It is important to learn how to recruit and maintain contraction of the transverse abdominus (the deepest abdominal muscles) and the multifidus (back muscles along the spine) before adding load to the exercise.

Core exercises should be done daily. Quality not quantity is important when working the core. All movements should be slow and controlled. Ask Sky for specific core exercises.
