Real stories from the Hogar

How would you feel if you were on the other side of the world, alone and dying? It started as an accident. The hospital asked us to take him in while he recovered. Things however, were more complicated than anyone thought. From Italy, on vacation, he had no family in Ecuador. Due to undisclosed pre-existing conditions, he is now dying and unable to return to his home. For us, this is a very complicated situation and expensive one as we have to be in charge of and pay for his hospice care. There is no public hospice care in Ecuador, the hospitals do not provide it. Once there are no treatment options, the person is discharged.

Without us, though he would die alone. We were able to arrange contact with his family and for them to talk with him. It is difficult on his family but giving them opportunity to say goodbye and to keep them updated is important. We are often called upon to help people in difficult situations from Colombia, Venezuela and other countries.
