Cuenca Soup Kitchen

We at Rough Knuckle Sconery found out through our network of friends who volunteer at the Cuenca Soup Kitchen that they were not able to supply the children who come to eat lunch there with milk at each seating. As with all non-profits need always exceeds the ability to meet it, so Rough Knuckle Sconery has donated sufficient funds to supply milk to the children for the next 7 weeks. This donation is in addition to our donating 100% of our profits for the sale of Rough Knuckle Scones, Cuenca Clotted Cream and our newest product, Biscotti sold at Mozart Coffee Cafe for the entire month of October.

According to Bob Higgins, “Our people are all vetted through Casa del Migrante which is the Mayor's project on immigration here in Cuenca. There is a social worker at Casa del Migrante that interviews potential candidates and they send over the people that truly need the services. We serve 140 people lunch on Tuesday - Friday. It is not a drop-in soup kitchen so someone could not just drop in for a free meal after a hike. Working with Casa del Migrante and the UN Rep. here in Cuenca the people are chosen according to need. We also have a free dispensary where we distribute clothes, blankets, bedding, etc. in partnership with area businesses who support the project. As far as numbers are concerned? We serve around 500 meals a week. Out of the approx 135 people a day we serve about 35% are under 10 years. We provide programs for the kids and special consideration is paid to their needs.

The people we serve do not need to be unemployed but they need to show need. Sustainable Cuenca is not a part of the selection process for who gets to come. That is all done by social workers at Cases del Migrante. The people who are selected at Casa del Migrante get a punch card to come to the soup kitchen for three weeks. Single mom's with small children can get additional time added to their cards. Others get three weeks and then a new group is given cards. The exception is when new people arrive in desperate conditions. We try to accommodate new arrivals.”
For those of you who have come to Mozart and purchased our products we humbly thank you and hope you enjoyed our scones, clotted cream and biscotti. We love what we do and are overwhelmed by the comments and compliments we have received. We promise to keep you informed on our progress. Please keep us busy.
