Legal tip: don't forget your ID in public

Legally in Ecuador one must always have the original of an ID on you: that means a cedula or passport in the vast majority of cases. Even if you are driving, you can still be asked for a cedula or passport instead of your driver´s license. If you get stopped, the police can do a criminal background check in the public system. If there are any suspicions of wrongdoing, it is possible they will detain you in order to do further investigation. At which point you can call your lawyer to make arrangements to get you released as soon as possible. Remember, if you do get stopped you have the right to record the persons dealing with you.
