Too old to exercise, no way

Even if you have never exercised in your life, you can begin at any age. You can only benefit from getting up and moving your body. Bone density will increase in response to weight bearing exercise, regardless of your age. Most conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc. can only benefit from regular exercise and proper nutrition.

The effects of exercise on the cardio-respiratory system, muscle and bone:

Heart - size and strength increases, maximum strength potential 20% per month.

Stroke Volume - the amount of blood pumped by the heart per beat or stroke is increased
Coronary arteries - increase in size which results in a greater flow of blood.

Arteries/veins/capillaries - increase in size and elasticity which results in; lower blood pressure, reduced chance of hardening of the arteries, and decreases the work load on the heart through the improved blood flow.

Blood - improved clotting time, breaks up blood clots in the system, reduces fatty acids.

Respiration - the muscles of respiration (the skeletal muscles located within the rib cage) increase in size, strength, and endurance. This allows for better oxygen uptake and exchange, decreasing the rate of respiration.

Bones - increase in density and strength by approximately 10% per month in response to weight bearing activities

Muscles - increase in strength by approximately 20% per month in response to being worked against higher workloads than those normally encountered.

*The added benefit of keeping your body moving are healthier joints and a better back. Our bodies were made to move. Lack of movement causes the joints to stiffen up and the back to become stiff and sore.
