Recommendation for Santorio Hibiscus, Hosteria, lodging in Yunguilla

My husband and I just got back from a 2-night getaway at the Santorio Hibiscus hosteria in the Yunguilla Valley, a welcome break from the Cuenca cold. This was our second visit to Hibiscus and each time we promise ourselves to head down there more often. Yunguilla is only 1 ½ hours from Cuenca, but in a totally different, subtropical ecosystem (70-80 degrees on our trip) with amazing views of the immense valley. Staying at the Hibiscus makes it a beautiful and relaxing stay. It’s a lovely, small hosteria set amidst lush gardens that include tropical flowers – and the birds and butterflies they attract – coffee trees (they make their own coffee), banana groves, a small 2-hammock garden area, and a clearing for spectacular sunrise or sunset views (including the lights of Santa Isabella).

Dan and Franziska, owners and hosts, add to the experience; aside from being enjoyable and interesting people, they are helpful for everything you might need, including making arrangements for transportation or local restaurants (not many, but with the coastal influence, some great seafood). And, one of our highlights, Francesca provides delicious gourmet meals nightly (working around any dietary requests you might have). Lunch is available as well, and a hearty breakfast is included.

We like the adventure (and price) of taking the bus down there, but the Hibiscus also provides a door-to-door driver for a reasonable fee ($30-$35, depending on where you live).
