Something to look for and be aware of before you rent

In older, charming houses, quintas and buildings there can be shower installations that can be potentially life-threatening, meaning electrocution. Even Ecuadoreans call them “widow-makers.”

This is an instant hot water provider unit attached to the shower head through which the cold water flows and becomes hot. We have seen some of these installations which lack the proper grounding and GFI switch (ground fault interruptor, which is an emergency circuit breaker necessary to save life in the event of an electrical shock). We have seen one such amateur installation even done with masking tape instead of electrical tape.

In short, water and 110 electricity don’t mix.

This type of shower hot water installation is a cheap way to avoid paying for gas. Just an FYI regarding some lovely, vintage rentals you may see in Cuenca.
