Looking for friends, please help

I realize this may not be the correct forum but I don’t know where else to post. I am an American living in Ecuador for the past 5 years. When I first arrived here I came alone, and I had nothing but a small retirement income, shared with my ex through the divorce. So, I came to start a new life here, and I dedicated all of my time and effort to building another stable life and income. I am embarrassed to say that I have never in these five years, met a fellow American, male or female.

I have learned Spanish while here and I really miss conversation in English. I live primarily in Guayaquil but have traveled throughout the country. I have no friends, only business associates or employees. I am now financially stable again and I have the time and the desire to have friends. Preferably, American friends. I realize there are more Americans in areas like Cuenca and Cuenca is close by. I have stayed in Cuenca a few times but I have had no success in meeting people. I simply don’t know how to go about it making friends there. I am going to arrive in Cuenca again later today and stay a couple of days. I know something about the underbelly of this country. From my own experience I know a lot about what not to do, safety awareness, street survival, buying high dollar items at low cost, real estate,

I am in my early 50s. I am from the midwest and so I have conservative views if that matters. I am opinionated and stubborn, and not really very politically correct. But I am honest. I have no vices, I mean well and I try to do what’s right. Surely there must be others who, like me, are bored and would like a friend to talk to, play cards, travel, fish, hike, etc.?

If there is anyone who can steer me in the right direction, to find friends, please help.
