Recommendation for Karibe, restaurant

A great place to add to your rotation of almuerzo options is Karibe. It is on P. Cordova a door or two west of Herm. Miguel on the north side. Alberto Delgado originally from Esmeraldas and his wife Nidia from Loja own the place.

It could be my bias as Alberto is a buddy of mine but I do believe that this almuerzo ($2.50) is a step up from most in town. It is Nidia’s rustic cocina Lojana that makes it special and wow can she crank out the meals.

For example, last week I had a sopa de fideo with an abnormally rich broth, perfectly cooked fideo and a bobbing chunk of bone/organ lined with liver meat. It struck me that it was the best fideo I’ve had in my one year in Cuenca. The chuleta was cooked perfectly and came doused in a tangy puddle of sweet and sour jus. Standard couple of small potatoes and mound of rice but again a noticeably above average blackberry juice. Hearty, satisfying food.

I’ve almuerzoed at Karibe about 25 times and I have never seen another estranjero. The clientele is all locals; mainly staff from banks and offices in the area. That is a good endorsement. And they do a brisk business, flawlessly with friendly service. Give it a try and see for yourself. No English but you don’t need it, Alberto will take care of you. The menu is posted outside. No almuerzos on weekends.

For the younger set, upstairs at Karibe becomes a DJ dance club on weekend nights. The flavor is very casual, 20 and 30-year-olds, occasionally even 51-year-old me, and a lot of drinking gets done - mostly Pilsner and whiskey.
