A special thank you to the Cuenca firefighters and ambulance service

On Saturday afternoon we had a major gas explosion in the apartment next door to us on the 5th. floor. Sadly, two women who were working in the apartment were seriously injured, our hearts and prayers go out to them for a full and speedy recovery.

The fire and ambulance workers were here within minutes.
They evacuated the women and transported them to hospitals.
They extinguished the fire which had caused major damage in the apartment.

Water and smoke had entered our apartment and they insisted we leave immediately. Luckily, both the fire chief and the head of the ambulance service spoke English...they were very concerned that we had inhaled smoke full of chemicals from the burning apartment.

We explained that we would not leave our place without finding our two Cuenca rescue cats that were hiding under the bed upstairs and shaking with terror. They immediately jumped into action and helped my wife find the two cats and put them in the carriers. One of them took the cats down the five flights of stairs outside the building and took us by the arm and guided us down the stairs.

They insisted we sit in the ambulance while they took our blood pressure and gave us oxygen. They kept us there for over 15 minutes to ensure we were ok.

Their incredible kindness and understanding were over and above the line of duty. Without their hard work matters could have been a lot worse.

As expats, we have always found Cuencanos to be kind, friendly and helpful. These gentlemen displayed that in spades.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Mike and Anna Maria Lentin.
