Insurance through IESS

We registered for IESS today and I thought some of the information we learned during this process might be of interest.

1) I am the primary and the process requires that I register myself first and then go back next week to register my wife.

2) In terms of "penalties" or "consequences", for not providing proof of insurance, the lady who helped me does not believe any decisions have been made. However, this question is one that really needs to be posed with immigration, not IESS.

3) Currently the new law has not impacted expats living in Ecuador on any of the other types of Visas. The increase only impacts those on the Retirement Visa.

4) IESS has not decided how or when the new rates will be applied to people enrolled under the "old" rules. At the moment, unless someone "volunteers", they will continue to be billed at the 17.6% of the Basic Essential Salary.

I think that's everything. Hope this helps.
