Live-in, bilingual nanny

Hello, We have been in Cuenca two weeks tomorrow and have been very fortunate to have a live-in nanny helping us take care of our granddaughter, Hannah, who will be three in December.

The problem with our current “helper” is that she speaks zero English. That’s not a problem for my wife and me. We can make ourselves understood or do for ourselves whatever we needed help with. Unfortunately, that’s not true for Hannah who happens to be a very bright, very vocal young lady with a rather large vocabulary for an almost three-year-old, every word of which is in English.

The short story is that Hannah is extremely frustrated by her inability to communicate with the current young lady.

My wife and I both work full time from home for American companies via the internet and we need someone who can “corral” our little girl and persuade her that she doesn’t need one or both of us to “hold” her all the time.

My Ecuadorian and American friends tell me that in most cases, the “nanny” would also help with other household functions as well such as cooking, cleaning, and laundry. If that’s normal, then I don’t want to break the norm. They also tell me that the salary for a position such as this would be in the $400 per month range including the insurance and other fees.

In terms of accommodations, we have leased a rather large home, 6 bedrooms, 4 baths with a separate 2 bedrooms, 1 bath apartment that most folks refer to as “servants” quarters. I don’t why I am so uncomfortable with that word, “servant”, but I am. I suspect it’s something to do with my middleclass background and the fact we never even had anyone mow the lawn much less help with housekeeping, laundry and cooking, but I am willing to get used to the idea.

In terms of English, the nanny doesn’t need to be “fluent” but she should be able to communicate with a three-year-old and at least have basic communication phrases down.

Please feel free to contact me via email or call me on my Ecuadorian or Us telephone numbers.
