Expat robbed on hiking trail south of Loja

Last Sunday, an expat hiking solo on a trail south of Loja near the Teleférico was robbed at knife-point by two men who accosted him on the trail. The expat believes that his taxi driver was part of the plot by purposely transporting the expat to the wrong trail head so that he could be ambushed by the robbers. The expat said that he had hailed the cab on the street which appeared to be a legitimate cab at the time. Safety advisory: avoid hiking on the trails south of Loja, especially solo, and whenever possible, avoid hailing cabs on the street - a safer procedure is to only use cabs called by your hotel.
